VPN - do i need it?

That’s a great question… What are your concerns?

Do you:

-Use “free” or public wifi on a regular basis?

-Participate in “questionable” internet browsing?

-Believe that your internet provider has no business knowing about your browsing habits?

-Want to increase your anonymity on the internet?

-Want to hide your actual internet service location?

-Want to appear as if you’re in another country to browse their sites as the locals do?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then yes, you do.

There are lots of reasons why you may want to subscribe to a VPN service. For me, it’s mostly about my personal browsing security when I’m connected to WiFi networks that I don’t maintain. If I go into a coffee shop, I don’t know if the “free” WiFi that I’m connecting to is a quality, secure network provided by the shop, or if it’s someone sitting in the corner broadcasting their own WiFi, capturing everything transmitted from my computer. That freaks me out. I don’t want someone to grab any of my personal data because I needed to hop on the WiFi.

What is a VPN?

Well, VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Make sense? Heh… just kidding. What a VPN does is create a secure tunnel between two (or more) devices across the public internet. For the regular computer user, a VPN service creates a private tunnel between your computer and a VPN server somewhere on the internet. That private tunnel encrypts all of the data passed between your computer and the VPN server so that no one in between can determine what type of data is being transmitted, much less any details about that data. I have my VPN client on my computer and phone set up so that it automatically connects the VPN when I connect to WiFi that’s not in my list of known safe networks. It’s nice to not have to worry about prying eyes.

Want to protect yourself?

If so, I highly recommend VyprVPN by Golden Frog. I’ve been using it for years now and have never had a problem. Their mobile and desktop apps are great and easy to use. You can even use the service on a Chromebook if that’s your jam. We’ve arranged for a great deal for our clients if they’d like to use VyprVPN. You’ll get 25% off of your first year by using the links found through this page.
